President's Update - March 2015

This past year has been a very active one for the friends of Shoal Harbor River. The group has successfully managed with the appreciated help of the town of ClarenVille and the Department of fisheries and oceans the installation and operation of a underwater camera to count and identify species of fish within the shoal harbour river ecosystem. The data retrieved during each spring, summer and fall season will be categorically compiled into a comprehensive yearly document/report. It is hoped that info retrieved will assist the department of fisheries and oceans in their ongoing research regarding non-native trout species impact on native fish species and for effective management of the resource in general.

Further enhancement activities on the lower part of shoal Harbour river were a focus for the group during the 2014 season. With the installation of storyboards and further landscaping improvements to FOSHR square, trail cleanup and recycling/waste depot maintenance is evidence of our groups continued commitment to enhancement, awareness and conservation of the shoal Harbor River ecosystem .

Also ,our group has managed to complete the purchase and installation of 24 hour surveillance video cameras, in cooperation with the town of clarenville, at the location of the fishway/dam shoal harbour river. Furthermore our group maintains signage at various locations along the river with crime stoppers contact info. It is hoped that by doing so it will discourage illegal activities.

This year we have a very ambitious agenda. we are going to start the year with our 7th annual duck race this may 26th, 2pm at the mouth of the river. get your tickets 466-7509 or 425-0692, five dollars to buy a duck, only 1000 tickets available. this annual event is a family favorite and a crowdpleaser.
